Decommissioning

ST BEES ISLAND

Snapshot

In St Bees Island’s pristine environment, DEMEX engaged to undertake demolition, asbestos removal, and remediation works to restore to nature a 4.2H parcel of land holding residences, human infrastructure, and 120 years of accumulated waste.

Project Role

Principal Contractor

Project Scope

Detailed logistics planning underpinned successful project delivery requiring transport of equipment, consumables, water and personnel to the Island by road, barge and helicopter within tide timeframes to avoid environmental damage. Site planning controlled demolition works to contain waste for removal. Dust suppression water was captured, cleaned and reused. Pulverising rather than hammer demolition of concrete reduced noise, protecting wildlife.

Project Highlights

  • Island location required stringent logistics planning to transport essential equipment by road, sea and helicopter, within tidal windows.
  • Extraordinary measures taken to protect landscape ecology, koala and turtle habitat, wetlands, Aboriginal cultural heritage and water flows.
  • Systematic, safe demolition of buildings containing asbestos, disposal of waste and recycling of materials.
  • Efficient use, maintenance and refueling onsite, especially protecting the environment and disposing of waste promptly to restrict area used.
  • Project completion to client satisfaction on time and budget incorporating scope variables resulting in extension for remediation.
