In early 2024, DEMEX was engaged by Queensland Health to deliver demolition and civil works at Gympie Hospital in regional Queensland. The focus was the deconstruction of Block 13 – the former Nurses’ Quarters – a structure found to be structurally unsound and contaminated with asbestos and lead. Operating within a live hospital environment, DEMEX navigated logistical, environmental, and stakeholder management challenges to safely complete the project
The project encompassed a full internal strip-out and demolition of the contaminated building, along with the safe removal of significant asbestos materials. Civil works were expanded mid project to include the construction of a new hospital carpark, a 60-metre retaining wall, full asphalt surfacing over 900m², drainage works, line marking, and installation of wheel stops. DEMEX coordinated multiple subcontractors and managed stakeholder liaison across QBuild and hospital operations.
