Following the removal of the original contractor under WorkSafe direction, DEMEX was appointed to take control of a complex inner-city demolition project. Initial efforts focused on securing the site and addressing hazardous materials, including widespread asbestos.
Located in a high-traffic CBD zone and flanked by neighbouring structures, the project required innovative solutions.
Clear communication with stakeholders and effective environmental controls were key to safely completing the works in a densely populated, constrained environment.
DEMEX was engaged to complete the demolition of a partially demolished structure, where significant asbestos contamination was discovered. Located in a busy CBD area, the project required carefully planned traffic management to ensure the surrounding pedestrian and vehicle flow could continue safely during peak hours.
Given the building’s close proximity to neighbouring properties, a revised demolition methodology was developed. This included the design and installation of a custom freestanding cantilevered scaffold system. This innovative approach minimised the risk of damage to adjoining structures and enabled demolition works to proceed safely and efficiently in a constrained urban environment.
Due to the building’s proximity to neighbouring properties, the revised demolition methodology made provisions for a unique scaffolding design that allowed for a freestanding cantilevered design. This approach reduced the risk and likelihood of impact to the adjoining building and allowed the demolition works to be conducted safely.Â
