DEMEX was engaged to undertake asbestos removal and structural demolition of two large portal frame sheds located adjacent to the Brisbane River as part of the Hamilton Northshore Major Roadworks Upgrade. The project involved high-risk operations due to the presence of live high-voltage power lines and radioactive traces within one of the structures. Despite these complexities, DEMEX delivered the works safely, on time, and in close coordination with BMD.
Works included A Class asbestos removal across multiple sheds, including vinyl flooring and pipework, as well as hazmat vacuuming in areas with low-level radioactive material. Structural demolition involved dismantling two large sheds using high reach equipment. The most complex structure, Shed K, stood at 17 metres tall and was brought down in a staged approach within three days. Progressive steel handling was implemented to maintain clear access on the live site and prevent stockpiling. All demolition and remediation activities were conducted under tight environmental and safety constraints.
Zero safety incidents despite close proximity to live HV powerlines, contaminated materials, and a public roadway.
Successful removal of radioactive traces, with full PPE hazmat vacuuming carried out ahead of demolition.
Strategic staged demolition, including controlled takedown of Shed K’s eastern and western bays due to internal column configuration.
Live site logistics management, with progressive steel loading to maintain safe access and minimise disruption.
Strong collaboration with BMD, ensuring streamlined project delivery and risk mitigation across all stages.
