McCarthy House, a multi storey building constructed in the 1930s, was located on the Warwick Hospital campus and historically served as Nursing Quarters and office space. Following an independent engineering assessment deeming the structure unsafe for occupancy, Darling Downs Health engaged DEMEX as principal contractor to demolish the building. The site was highly constrained, bordered by residential properties, newly built nursing accommodation, and a hospital helipad, requiring sensitive and well coordinated project delivery.
DEMEX was responsible for the complete removal of McCarthy House, including internal strip out, asbestos remediation, structural demolition, and site remediation. Emphasis was placed on salvaging materials of value, particularly hardwood timbers, for reuse, in line with Darling Downs Health’s sustainability goals. Mechanical demolition was preceded by hazardous material removal and environmental controls to ensure safety and minimal disruption to hospital operations.
Complex delivery within a live hospital environment, with scaffolding installed on boundary lines to protect adjoining infrastructure and access roads.
Effective stakeholder and traffic management, supported by the daily presence of two traffic control officers to ensure safety near the helipad and shared access zones.
Sustainable demolition practices, including the recovery of over 10 tonnes of clean hardwood for reuse, aligning with client environmental objectives.
