Demex wins Australian Workplace Health & Safety Excellence Award

Demex is back on the winner’s podium again with our most recent success as recipient of the 2021 Australian Workplace Health and Safety Excellence Award for small to medium enterprises. And while winning isn’t everything, it is immensely satisfying when the efforts of our team are recognised in this way.

The win comes off the back of our work on the Mulwala project, which was delivered in 2020 and resulted in DEMEX winning at the World Demolition Awards. A highly complex project, our approach required that we consider the scale of the operation; the number of workers onsite operating concurrently in multiple work zones; the potential for volatility as equipment engaged with high risk chemicals, often concealed; and removal of fragile, aged asbestos. All this had to take place while business as usual continued on the site of Australia’s most hazardous facility and within the constraints of COVID-19 protocols during a lockdown period.

So what was our award winning approach? Here are just a few of the measures we applied to deliver the Mulwala project safely and successfully:

  • We used equipment cleverly with task-specific attachments to reduce risks. 
  • A built-in dust suppression head attachment significantly minimised the risk of ignition
  • A 125 foot knuckle booms provided access to elevated areas to remove aged, fragile asbestos eliminating exposure of personnel
  • A custom fabricated blade attachment was used to process steel tanks.

Throughout the project we maintained a strong focus on recycling. Safe disposal meant 100 percent of concrete and steel was committed to recycling, with only 30 tonnes of general solid waste going to local landfill. Asbestos waste was disposed of at a licensed landfill using EPA licensed trucks under waste tracking documentation, providing an added layer of accountability for us and peace of mind for the client, Australian Munitions.

Delivering the project on time, within budget, and safely was always the goal, however to be acknowledged for this by our industry peers with this award is further recognition we are continuing to reach new heights.
