DEMEX was engaged as the demolition, remediation and civil contractor for the Armidale Secondary College Redevelopment Project.
The project involved the complete demolition of Armidale High School with the exception of the heritage listed B Block which underwent extensive internal manual demolition works.
DEMEX’s hazmat team removed all identified hazardous materials from each of the thirteen school blocks. Upon receipt of clearance certificates, DEMEX’s fleet of excavators completed the structural demolition works.
The civil portion of the job involved excavation and placement of over 40,000m3 of material. To meet this task, DEMEX mobilised an array of earth moving machines such as excavators, compactors, dozers, scrappers and rollers. The works required detailed programming and staging of the works in order to avoid clash with other trades on site.
During the civil works, multiple unexpected finds were encountered including significant areas of asbestos impacted soil and PAH, nickel and benzo(a) pyrene contamination hotspots. All contaminated soil was remediated as per the Remediation Action Plan (RAP) and subsequent recommendations.
