DEMEX was engaged as the sole contractor for demolition of the former Orange Base Hospital; a project which included an extensive hazardous material removal program including large quantities of heavily vandalised friable asbestos pipe insulation across the site, lead contaminated dust, and underground storage tanks (UST).
The DEMEX hazmat removal team worked closely with the independent licensed asbestos assessor to remove the extensive list of hazardous materials to facilitate the safe demolition of the structures. The demolition works included a complete site clearance of the 23,000m2 city block.
Upon completion of the demolition works and excavation of the basement area, large scale legacy contamination was identified in the soil. Working with the onsite environmental scientist, approximately 10,000 tonne of asbestos impacted soil was safety removed from site.
The client prepared methodology required craning an excavator to the top of the six-storey structure for a top down demolition, however DEMEX’s demolition approach utilising our 62T high reach demolition excavator allowed the demolition to be completed from the ground much quicker, more cost effective and more importantly, significantly safer.
To reach the projects recycling targets, 23,000 tonne of concrete was crushed, processed and stockpiled onsite for reuse.
