QUEENSLAND BUY BACK SCHEME DEMOLITION

Snapshot

Together with the Queensland State Government, in 2023, the Ipswich City Council commenced a large program of works involving the removal of flood affected structures. DEMEX was engaged as principal contractor to undertake demolition of Package 12 multiple structures affected by the floods which impacted Southeast Queensland in January 2022. Works also included reinstatement of ground back to parkland and soil remediation due to asbestos contamination.

Project Role

Principal Contractor

Project Scope

To manage concerns about asbestos contamination of neighbouring property owners, effective communications was undertaken as part of a broader approach to stakeholder management.

As a result of the impact to schedule caused by the delay in the electricity service disconnection, where safe to do so, two crews worked in parallel to complete the works with minimal impact to the original program.

Project Highlights

Delivered as part of the Queensland Government’s Buy Back Scheme, the project team encountered negative community sentiment in relation to the project works in addition to theft and equipment vandalism. Despite these challenges, the team maintained the highest levels of professionalism and completed the project without injury or incident. All procurement was conducted with Southeast Queensland businesses in keeping with our commitment to buying local.
