DEMEX was engaged as the demolition contractor for Stage 3 of the Wagga Wagga Regional Referral Hospital Redevelopment Project. Demolition works included a number of historic buildings including the Old Hospital Building constructed in 1908 and the Robinson House Building.
Working within live hospital grounds required detailed coordination and open communication with key stakeholders throughout the project to ensure hospital users were not adversely impacted. DEMEX’s specialised 62 tonne high-reach demolition excavator was utilised to safely demolish the old hospital building.
Both structures had legacy friable asbestos contamination within the sub-floor areas from previously uncontrolled friable asbestos removal works. DEMEX’s specialised hazmat removal team, working with the environmental scientist, safety remediated all contaminated soil which included a hotspot of lead and benzo(A) pyrene contamination
Independent environmental scientists conducted a thorough validation assessment to confirm that the site was free from residual contaminants and safe for the construction of new hospital buildings.
