DEMEX was engaged to carry out the decommissioning, demolition and disposal of the gold processing Old Blayney Dewatering Plant in Blayney, western New South Wales.
Demolition challenges surrounded mainly safety and environmental considerations. The location abutting a railway line and live transformer meant introducing safety measures to eliminate any impact on infrastructure as the tall structure was demolished.
A detailed, sequential 3D demolition plan outlined a process, limiting the number of workers entering the active demolition zone. Dust suppression, traffic and noise monitoring minimised local impact. Independent environmental monitoring verified complete removal of residual mining product.
Before demolition could begin, reclamation of residual mining products (copper and gold) coating the internal area of the site was essential. Value of reclaimed minerals returned twice the contract cost.
