DEMEX was engaged as the preferred subcontractor for this interstate project based in Braidwood and Harden in regional New South Wales.
The project involved extensive HAZMAT removal including that of asbestos, lead and mould. Demolition works followed thereafter to the multiple redundant buildings on the grounds of a live hospital site.
These works were completed in multiple stages to allow for structures to be progressively rebuilt and to avoid major disruptions to the hospital facility.
The DEMEX team and the project more broadly faced a myriad of challenges when the COVID-19 travel restrictions were imposed. Through extensive planning and a strong commitment from the site personnel to be permanently based in the local community, meant that the project was executed on programme and without delays.
The local community were extremely connected to the original hospital buildings and DEMEX worked with locals and the main contractor, to address and monitor their sensitivities to the works in progress. The old staff accommodation building ‘Gumtree Cottage’ was donated to a local not-for-profit organization, Braidwood Life Centre, which required crane lifts to transport the building in 3 separate sections.
